St Chad’s Catholic & Church of England High School serves young people aged 11 – 16 years old within the neighbouring communities of Runcorn, Widnes and Halton. Situated just off the A533 and close to the M56, the school is easily accessible by road from the surrounding areas of Cheshire, Warrington, Merseyside and Manchester.

In 2009 the Catholic Diocese of Shrewsbury and the Church of England Diocese of Chester agreed that the St Chad’s Catholic VA school would become a joint Catholic and Church of England High School and thereby provide a much needed Church of England secondary education in Halton.

Although there is much to celebrate at St Chad’s, the school has faced a number of challenges culminating in a second Special Measures judgement in December 2019.

The rebuilding process is already underway, with the appointment of a highly experienced and energetic Interim Executive Board supported by both Dioceses and the Halton LA. The IEB have wasted no time in tackling many of the key issues and making sound decisions to create a sustainable and high performing faith school.

The role of Headteacher is not without its challenges, but there is now an air of optimism amongst staff, students and parents that the school is on the right path. There is still a lot of work to do to drive the school forward, including improving teaching and learning and to develop the skills of middle and senior leaders. There will be new teams in place and some new ways of working introduced but there will still be a fairly blank canvas for the new Headteacher to make their mark.

For an existing Head, this could be the next big challenge you seek…or, equally, for an experienced Deputy Head with still yet untapped potential, this could be the right opportunity for you.

Given its uniqueness as a joint Catholic and Church of England School, the Headteacher must understand and practice one of these two faiths and also be fully supportive of the other. You must therefore be either a practising Catholic or a practising Anglican to be considered for the role.

We want you to be sure that this would be the right thing for you as well as us. You are therefore welcome to talk informally with us and to visit the school. Liam Dowds at Emmaus Leadership can discreetly and confidentially make arrangements and also tell you more about us.

Closing date: Noon Monday 14th September 2020

Interviews: Mon 21 and Tues 22 September

"We had been cold called by a few other companies but chose Emmaus as it specialised in Church schools. We were impressed by Liam and his team coming to the school and burrowing in to what the school wanted and needed. He asked searching questions and we were satisfied this was the way forward. I had not been a fan of head hunters before, but I have to say this process and its result was a hugely better experience than going out on our own and was totally professional throughout."

Bridget Prentice, Chair of Governors - Trinity School, Lewisham

"I have no hesitation in commending Emmaus to any school which is seeking to appoint a Christian Head. My only regret is that we did not go to them for the first round of interviews that proved unsuccessful. It is an expensive option, but in the long run they are more than value for money. I am very thankful to God for the ministry of Emmaus, and I warmly commend them to you. In OFSTED terms, they are outstanding."

The Rt Rev Keith Sinclair - Anglican Bishop of Birkenhead

"…we also considered other external recruiters, but Emmaus were clear favourites in terms of their recruitment expertise and in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the catholic school’s sector."

Peter Giorgio, Director of Education, Nottingham Diocese

"I have personal experience of the quality of service Emmaus provides, when I successfully applied for a Headship position through them. I always felt I could call up, get the ‘inside take’ on the school and ask any questions in complete confidence. The support and expert advice I received made the application process far less daunting and I would thoroughly recommend Emmaus to any Church School looking to appoint a key Leadership position."

Dan Pickard, Headteacher, The Bishop’s CE Primary School - Thetford

"Thank you for all your support, advice and professionalism through out the long and complex process of our Head’s appointment. Having helped us appoint first time round it was unfortunate, due to personal circumstances, that our new Head had to subsequently withdraw post appointment. We were truly grateful for your service guarantee, which meant we incurred no further costs in appointing her replacement. Your unfailing support and advice at all times was greatly appreciated."

Nicholas van As, Chair of Personnel Committee - Coulsdon CE Primary School

"Emmaus were instrumental in persuading me to apply for the post of Headteacher. I had seen the school advertising in the past but nothing inspired me to get in touch. Once Emmaus advertised I felt intrigued and keen to learn more about the school. I was supported throughout the whole process, which was a very personal and positive experience. I would highly recommend Emmaus to any school thinking of recruiting, and candidates considering registering. If my new school had not used Emmaus I probably wouldn’t have applied."

Hannah Walters, Headteacher, Platt CE Primary School - Kent

"Having previously struggled to recruit two Headteachers - for both a Primary and a Secondary school - Emmaus came to the rescue. Their expert advice and deep understanding of recruiting Headship positions in Catholic schools is invaluable, and I have no hesitation in recommending their knowhow and their values."

Fr David Gibbons, Chair of Governors & Parish Priest, Archdiocese of Southwark

"Emmaus brings a level of professionalism, seen in other industry sectors, to church schools’ recruitment."

The Rt Rev Nick Baines - Anglican Bishop of Leeds

"Thank you for everything you did to successfully support our recruitment of an outstanding Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. Using Emmaus Leadership to manage the recruitment to the post was much debated and was the subject of intense scrutiny by our Governing Body who were somewhat reluctant to use a leadership recruitment specialist. However, their confidence was reinstated as a result of your professional approach, your insightful knowledge and the resulting candidate pool produced for both appointments. I have no hesitation in recommending Emmaus to other schools."

Annie Sutton - Executive Principal, St Joseph's RC Specialist School and College

"I want to thank everyone at Emmaus for your support in recruiting our new Headteacher. You ensured that we were able to ‘cast a wide net’ and have a number of high quality applications to shortlist from. It was a great outcome for us and one I do not think we would have achieved on our own. We will be sure to be in contact again."
