Outstanding Leadership Recruitment.

Emmaus Leadership specialise in the recruitment of Headteachers, Principals, Deputy Headteachers, Assistant Headteachers for Church Schools, Chief Executive Offices (CEOs), Chief Operating Offices (COOs), Finance Directors (FDs) and Human Resource Directors (HRDs) for Christian Multi-Academy Trusts.

We are well aware that whilst composing a job advert and candidate pack can be achieved in-house with relative ease, the real objective of obtaining sufficient quality application for your leadership post can be immensely challenging for Church Schools.

At Emmaus we have developed an effective recruitment strategy that has enabled over 90% of the schools we have worked with to appoint first time.

This is achieved through a specialised recruitment approach which is tailored to support both the academic and spiritual needs of each school or trust we work with.

How do we successfully find and attract outstanding leaders?

There are several key elements to the way we work:

  • We speak extensively with Governors and Local Committee members to understand the unique story and qualities of each school we work with
  • We create and roll out a focused candidate communication campaign and crucially, provide an opportunity for candidates to discuss the opportunity in detail and in absolute confidence
  • Our extensive network enables us to reach both active and passive candidates
  • We consistently deliver a strong field of potential candidates that allows Governors and Trustees to shortlist with confidence
  • We "think like a candidate

Are you looking to recruit a Headteacher or Principal?

Then think like candidate...

Traditional recruitment advertising on its own is no longer sufficient in a recruitment climate where “active” candidates are increasingly hard to come by.

Increased levels of retirement, numerous Headteachers moving to Academy CEO and Senior Leadership Trust positions and fewer junior teachers harbouring leadership aspirations has resulted in a dwindling pool of potential candidates.

Which is why now, more than ever, we need to ‘think like a candidate’.

This enables us to attract both a greater number and higher calibre of leaders through a recruitment approach that prioritises the interests and care of candidates throughout the recruitment process .

Emmaus has the expertise, dedication and passion to help your church school find its next leader.  With over 30 years experience in leadership recruitment, we have developed a service that supports prospective candidates, Governors and Local Committee Members every step of the way; ensuring that you will appoint the very best leader for your school.

But don’t just take it from us…

"We are delighted with the appointment we made and I have reported to the whole community that we could not have been more thorough in the search or more rigorous in the selection process. Thank you Emmaus Leadership."

Jacqui Feely, Chair at All Hallows Catholic College, Macclesfield

We are often asked where the key to our consistent appointment of outstanding Church School leaders lies.

This is to be found in the hours spent in conversation with our extensive network and the prospective candidates whom we encourage to apply for your position.  Very often these great leaders are not considering their next job move. However, with time and the careful sharing of information we ensure that these leaders have the opportunity to explore the possibility of leading your school and/or can get a proper feel for your opportunity and can then recommend someone we can approach.

These ‘unseen’ conversations are instrumental to how we work at Emmaus – they are sensitive, insightful and reflective of what you are looking for. We take the time to get to know the ‘whole’ candidate so that we can ensure you receive applications from candidates who have a strong desire to lead your school or trust.

We also offer a comprehensive understanding of the leadership pay scale which enables us to support Governors/Trustees in making an informed decision regarding appropriate levels of pay for their leaders within schools and those joining Multi-Academy Trusts. We seek to provide expert advice, ensuring that leaders are earning an appropriate salary for their job role.

In addition to this we support schools who require Interim Headteachers if they have been unable to fill the position themselves. Please speak with our team if you wish to access our Interim placement expertise with the option of combining full time / permanent leadership requirement.

Emmaus Leadership works alongside every type of school: Infant, Primary, Secondary, All-Through schools and Specialist Schools.

Given the reduced number of aspiring leaders coming forward we understand our calling as a Christian organization lies not simply in finding candidates to fill specific leadership positions, but to also nurture future leaders for all Church Schools.

Working with your Multi-Academy Trust.

We are working with an increasing number of Christian trusts that have either developed as part of a Catholic or Church of England Diocese, or a stand alone Christian Multi-Academy Trust.  Moreover we have supported new trusts looking to recruit a Christian CEO by implementing a comprehensive recruitment procedure for the pivotal senior leadership position.  Our expertise ensures that we fully explore the exact structure of the CEO job role for your trust –ensuring your new CEO fully embodies your vision.  We have also supported MATs with the recruitment of other key leadership positions –Chief Operating Office (COO), Finance Director (FD), Human Resources Directors (HRD).

We welcome the opportunity to work in partnership with a Multi-Academy Trust in order to support Senior Leadership Team recruitment within trust schools.

"Emmaus were instrumental in persuading me to apply for the post of Headteacher. I had seen the school advertising in the past but nothing inspired me to get in touch. Once Emmaus advertised I felt intrigued and keen to learn more about the school. I was supported throughout the whole process, which was a very personal and positive experience. I would highly recommend Emmaus to any school thinking of recruiting, and candidates considering registering. If my new school had not used Emmaus I probably wouldn’t have applied."

Hannah Walters, Headteacher, Platt CE Primary School - Kent

"Emmaus brings a level of professionalism, seen in other industry sectors, to church schools’ recruitment."

The Rt Rev Nick Baines - Anglican Bishop of Leeds

"I have no hesitation in commending Emmaus to any school that is seeking to appoint a Christian Headteacher. In particular, Emmaus’ ability to promote the school, assess the ethos of the school and communicate this within the networks of those who might be considered as possible candidates was invaluable."

Clive Purser, Chair of Governors, St Andrew's CE High School for Boys, Worthing

"I have personal experience of the quality of service Emmaus provides, when I successfully applied for a Headship position through them. I always felt I could call up, get the ‘inside take’ on the school and ask any questions in complete confidence. The support and expert advice I received made the application process far less daunting and I would thoroughly recommend Emmaus to any Church School looking to appoint a key Leadership position."

Dan Pickard, Headteacher, The Bishop’s CE Primary School - Thetford

"We are delighted with the appointment we made and I have reported to the whole community that we could not have been more thorough in the search or more rigorous in the selection process. Thank you Emmaus Leadership."

Jacqui Feely, Chair at All Hallows Catholic College, Macclesfield

"I approached Emmaus following our unsuccessful attempts to recruit Deputy DDEs for both Dioceses. They went on to source a far greater number of candidates of high calibre. I highly recommend Emmaus!"

Canon Carolyn Lewis, Director of Education - Diocese of Leicester and Diocese of Derby

"Thank you for everything you did to successfully support our recruitment of an outstanding Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. Using Emmaus Leadership to manage the recruitment to the post was much debated and was the subject of intense scrutiny by our Governing Body who were somewhat reluctant to use a leadership recruitment specialist. However, their confidence was reinstated as a result of your professional approach, your insightful knowledge and the resulting candidate pool produced for both appointments. I have no hesitation in recommending Emmaus to other schools."

Annie Sutton - Executive Principal, St Joseph's RC Specialist School and College

"I have no hesitation in commending Emmaus to any school which is seeking to appoint a Christian Head. My only regret is that we did not go to them for the first round of interviews that proved unsuccessful. It is an expensive option, but in the long run they are more than value for money. I am very thankful to God for the ministry of Emmaus, and I warmly commend them to you. In OFSTED terms, they are outstanding."

The Rt Rev Keith Sinclair - Anglican Bishop of Birkenhead

"We came across Emmaus by accident after our own attempts to recruit a Headteacher failed. We would not hesitate to engage them again to find a suitable candidate for a leadership position."

Michael Tennant - Chairman of the Board, St Edward's School

"Could we afford it? My belief, as Chair was that we couldn’t afford not to. We needed strong school leaders to be drawn to apply. Our success was down to using Emmaus and definitely money well spent."

Carry Lynott - Chair of Governors, Our Lady and St Brendan's Catholic Primary School, Bradford
