Deputy Headteacher - Curriculum, Assessment & Standards

Salary: L21 - L27 (Inner London)
Location: Southfields, Wandsworth, SW18
Contract Type: Full Time
Contract Term: Permanent
Start Date: September 2020

We are an expanding, heavily oversubscribed 11-18 Church of England academy (NOR 974 including 196 in Sixth Form) with an overtly Christian ethos, serving the local community of Southfields in Wandsworth. We are at an exciting stage as we seek to appoint a second Deputy Headteacher to take overall responsibility for the Quality of Education - Curriculum, Assessment & Standards.

We were judged ‘Good’ in our most recent Ofsted inspection (Jan 2018). Our headteacher, who was appointed in 2019, has further emboldened our staff to drive school improvement further, supported by a strong and committed leadership team including a new Deputy Headteacher (focused on Teaching and Learning) who was successfully recruited earlier this year to start in September 2021. We will be increasing our PAN from 150 to 180, with a £4m expansion of the site already underway.

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring a broad, structured and coherent curriculum entitlement which sets out the knowledge, skills and value that will be taught
  • Supporting effective curriculum leadership, developing curriculum team leaders with high levels of relevant experience with access to professional networks and communities
  • Ensuring valid, reliable and proportionate approaches are used when assessing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the curriculum
  • Sustaining a culture and practices that enable all pupils to access the curriculum and learn effectively
  • Lead on school self-evaluation – with relation to standards and achievement – and thereby identify priorities for improvement

You are likely to have a strong curriculum background - having come up the Head of Department rather than pastoral route and be at Assistant or Deputy Head level currently.

If you believe you have what it takes to be part of a school community that continues to move forward, delivering the very best education for all our young people, then we would like to hear from you.

In the first instance, please contact Liam Dowds, our Emmaus Leadership Advising Consultant who is assisting us with this recruitment, in complete confidence on 01737 652 043 or ldowds@emmausleadership.me to request an application pack.

Closing date: Sunday 25th April at Midnight
Shortlisting: Monday 26th April
Interviews: Tuesday 4th and Wednesday 5th May

School visits are available on 20th, 21st and 23rd April.

Our school is an equal opportunities employer and committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. DBS check required.

"Thank you for all your support, advice and professionalism through out the long and complex process of our Head’s appointment. Having helped us appoint first time round it was unfortunate, due to personal circumstances, that our new Head had to subsequently withdraw post appointment. We were truly grateful for your service guarantee, which meant we incurred no further costs in appointing her replacement. Your unfailing support and advice at all times was greatly appreciated."

Nicholas van As, Chair of Personnel Committee - Coulsdon CE Primary School

"I cannot imagine a better service to fulfil the requirement of helping a Catholic school find a Head. I was impressed with the number and high quality of candidates sourced by Emmaus Leadership."

Marjorie Bannister, Chair - St Michael's Catholic College, London

"Having previously struggled to recruit two Headteachers - for both a Primary and a Secondary school - Emmaus came to the rescue. Their expert advice and deep understanding of recruiting Headship positions in Catholic schools is invaluable, and I have no hesitation in recommending their knowhow and their values."

Fr David Gibbons, Chair of Governors & Parish Priest, Archdiocese of Southwark

"I have no hesitation in commending Emmaus to any school that is seeking to appoint a Christian Headteacher. In particular, Emmaus’ ability to promote the school, assess the ethos of the school and communicate this within the networks of those who might be considered as possible candidates was invaluable."

Clive Purser, Chair of Governors, St Andrew's CE High School for Boys, Worthing

"Emmaus brings a level of professionalism, seen in other industry sectors, to church schools’ recruitment."

The Rt Rev Nick Baines - Anglican Bishop of Leeds

"We tried going it alone to find a CEO for our MAT but had only 2 applicants who didn't meet our requirements. We approached Emmaus and from the start their professionalism was reassuring. They explained the different options and detailed processes behind their service and we felt the best option for us was their full service with Interview Support. We weren’t disappointed. From their creation of a professional candidate pack, through to their expert interview support, we were thoroughly impressed. I am convinced that their proactive approach, combined with their extensive and varied marketing initiatives, is the reason we attracted such a wide level of interest and inquiries about the position, not only from people in the local area and the UK, but also from those looking to return from overseas. If you are having problems filling senior posts in your school, or you are embarking on leadership recruitment for the first time, I strongly recommend you talk to Liam and his team."

Barry Leyland, Chair - Blessed Edward Bamber Catholic Multi Academy Trust

"I want to thank everyone at Emmaus for your support in recruiting our new Headteacher. You ensured that we were able to ‘cast a wide net’ and have a number of high quality applications to shortlist from. It was a great outcome for us and one I do not think we would have achieved on our own. We will be sure to be in contact again."

Dave Cobb - School Business & Development Manager, Saint Cecilia's CE School, London

"…we also considered other external recruiters, but Emmaus were clear favourites in terms of their recruitment expertise and in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the catholic school’s sector."

Peter Giorgio, Director of Education, Nottingham Diocese

"We are delighted with the appointment we made and I have reported to the whole community that we could not have been more thorough in the search or more rigorous in the selection process. Thank you Emmaus Leadership."

Jacqui Feely, Chair at All Hallows Catholic College, Macclesfield

"We had been cold called by a few other companies but chose Emmaus as it specialised in Church schools. We were impressed by Liam and his team coming to the school and burrowing in to what the school wanted and needed. He asked searching questions and we were satisfied this was the way forward. I had not been a fan of head hunters before, but I have to say this process and its result was a hugely better experience than going out on our own and was totally professional throughout."

Bridget Prentice, Chair of Governors - Trinity School, Lewisham
