Diocesan Director of Education

Salary: Competitive
Location: Salisbury, Wiltshire
Contract Type: Full Time
Contract Term: Permanent
Start Date: Negotiable

Emmaus Leadership have been retained to manage the key appointment of a Director of Education for the Salisbury Diocesan Board of Education (SDBE).

SDBE has oversight of 193 Church Schools (including 5 middle and 10 secondary schools) educating more than 42000 children and young people across 5 Local Authorities. 107 of these diocesan schools have already converted to academy status, 24 of which have joined The Diocese of Salisbury Academy Trust (DSAT). The SDBE enjoys working in very close partnership with 20 mixed MATs - many of which contain both Church and community schools.

The SDBE enjoys a sphere of influence that extends far beyond the reach of CofE schools, as it strives to be bold and forward-thinking in embracing the opportunities afforded by the fast-changing educational landscape; recognising the missional opportunity to work across the educational system for the common good, building deep working and strategic partnerships at a local, regional and national level.

This is an exciting opportunity for a strategic, systems-leader to lead a well-resourced, highly experienced and committed team as we seek to support schools, academies and the wider Church in its mission to enable the delivery of educational excellence, framed within our distinctive and deeply Christian vision.

We are looking for someone with a:

  • Proven track record of working successfully in a senior educational context (for example, as a Headteacher or equivalent, DDE or senior local authority colleague) securing improvement and change
  • Passion for leading the DBE’s mission to uphold, cherish and develop the deeply Christian character of church schools and academies
  • Commitment to working collaboratively in order to build a vibrant school and parish partnership which impacts positively on the spiritual development of children and young people
  • Proven understanding of leading highly accountable teams which enable change, improvement and development

If you are seeking a fresh challenge, have a clear and deep sense of vocation and can provide the leadership that inspires and motivates others towards excellence, then we would love to hear from you.

A requirement of the post is that applicants must be practising Christians.

The role will require a combination of home and office working, as required.

"I have personal experience of the quality of service Emmaus provides, when I successfully applied for a Headship position through them. I always felt I could call up, get the ‘inside take’ on the school and ask any questions in complete confidence. The support and expert advice I received made the application process far less daunting and I would thoroughly recommend Emmaus to any Church School looking to appoint a key Leadership position."

Dan Pickard, Headteacher, The Bishop’s CE Primary School - Thetford

"I have no hesitation in commending Emmaus to any school which is seeking to appoint a Christian Head. My only regret is that we did not go to them for the first round of interviews that proved unsuccessful. It is an expensive option, but in the long run they are more than value for money. I am very thankful to God for the ministry of Emmaus, and I warmly commend them to you. In OFSTED terms, they are outstanding."

The Rt Rev Keith Sinclair - Anglican Bishop of Birkenhead

"We came across Emmaus by accident after our own attempts to recruit a Headteacher failed. We would not hesitate to engage them again to find a suitable candidate for a leadership position."

Michael Tennant - Chairman of the Board, St Edward's School

"Thank you for everything you did to successfully support our recruitment of an outstanding Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. Using Emmaus Leadership to manage the recruitment to the post was much debated and was the subject of intense scrutiny by our Governing Body who were somewhat reluctant to use a leadership recruitment specialist. However, their confidence was reinstated as a result of your professional approach, your insightful knowledge and the resulting candidate pool produced for both appointments. I have no hesitation in recommending Emmaus to other schools."

Annie Sutton - Executive Principal, St Joseph's RC Specialist School and College

"I have no hesitation in commending Emmaus to any school that is seeking to appoint a Christian Headteacher. In particular, Emmaus’ ability to promote the school, assess the ethos of the school and communicate this within the networks of those who might be considered as possible candidates was invaluable."

Clive Purser, Chair of Governors, St Andrew's CE High School for Boys, Worthing

"We considered TES, but the critical factor for us was that Emmaus are not only specialists in recruiting Headteachers, they are Christians focused exclusively on recruiting for Church Schools."

Canon Bob Baker, Chair of Governors,The Bishop’s CE School - Thetford

"…we also considered other external recruiters, but Emmaus were clear favourites in terms of their recruitment expertise and in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the catholic school’s sector."

Peter Giorgio, Director of Education, Nottingham Diocese

"We are delighted with the appointment we made and I have reported to the whole community that we could not have been more thorough in the search or more rigorous in the selection process. Thank you Emmaus Leadership."

Jacqui Feely, Chair at All Hallows Catholic College, Macclesfield

"I approached Emmaus following our unsuccessful attempts to recruit Deputy DDEs for both Dioceses. They went on to source a far greater number of candidates of high calibre. I highly recommend Emmaus!"

Canon Carolyn Lewis, Director of Education - Diocese of Leicester and Diocese of Derby

"I cannot imagine a better service to fulfil the requirement of helping a Catholic school find a Head. I was impressed with the number and high quality of candidates sourced by Emmaus Leadership."

Marjorie Bannister, Chair - St Michael's Catholic College, London
