Deputy Headteacher - Curriculum, Assessment & Standards

Salary: L21 - L27 (Inner London)
Location: Southfields, Wandsworth, SW18
Contract Type: Full Time
Contract Term: Permanent

We are an expanding, heavily oversubscribed 11-18 Church of England academy (NOR 974 including 196 in Sixth Form) with an overtly Christian ethos, serving the local community of Southfields in Wandsworth. We are at an exciting stage as we seek to appoint a second Deputy Headteacher to take overall responsibility for the Quality of Education - Curriculum, Assessment & Standards.

We were judged ‘Good’ in our most recent Ofsted inspection (Jan 2018). Our headteacher, who was appointed in 2019, has further emboldened our staff to drive school improvement further, supported by a strong and committed leadership team including a new Deputy Headteacher (focused on Teaching and Learning) who was successfully recruited earlier this year to start in September 2021. We will be increasing our PAN from 150 to 180, with a £4m expansion of the site already underway.

You will be responsible for:

  • Ensuring a broad, structured and coherent curriculum entitlement which sets out the knowledge, skills and value that will be taught
  • Supporting effective curriculum leadership, developing curriculum team leaders with high levels of relevant experience with access to professional networks and communities
  • Ensuring valid, reliable and proportionate approaches are used when assessing pupils’ knowledge and understanding of the curriculum
  • Sustaining a culture and practices that enable all pupils to access the curriculum and learn effectively
  • Lead on school self-evaluation – with relation to standards and achievement – and thereby identify priorities for improvement

You are likely to have a strong curriculum background - having come up the Head of Department rather than pastoral route and be at Assistant or Deputy Head level currently.

If you believe you have what it takes to be part of a school community that continues to move forward, delivering the very best education for all our young people, then we would like to hear from you.

In the first instance, please contact Liam Dowds, our Emmaus Leadership Advising Consultant who is assisting us with this recruitment, in complete confidence on 01737 652 043 or ldowds@emmausleadership.me to request an application pack.

Our school is an equal opportunities employer and committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children. DBS check required.

"Could we afford it? My belief, as Chair was that we couldn’t afford not to. We needed strong school leaders to be drawn to apply. Our success was down to using Emmaus and definitely money well spent."

Carry Lynott - Chair of Governors, Our Lady and St Brendan's Catholic Primary School, Bradford

"We considered TES, but the critical factor for us was that Emmaus are not only specialists in recruiting Headteachers, they are Christians focused exclusively on recruiting for Church Schools."

Canon Bob Baker, Chair of Governors,The Bishop’s CE School - Thetford

"…we also considered other external recruiters, but Emmaus were clear favourites in terms of their recruitment expertise and in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the catholic school’s sector."

Peter Giorgio, Director of Education, Nottingham Diocese

"We came across Emmaus by accident after our own attempts to recruit a Headteacher failed. We would not hesitate to engage them again to find a suitable candidate for a leadership position."

Michael Tennant - Chairman of the Board, St Edward's School

"I approached Emmaus following our unsuccessful attempts to recruit Deputy DDEs for both Dioceses. They went on to source a far greater number of candidates of high calibre. I highly recommend Emmaus!"

Canon Carolyn Lewis, Director of Education - Diocese of Leicester and Diocese of Derby

"Thank you for everything you did to successfully support our recruitment of an outstanding Headteacher and Deputy Headteacher. Using Emmaus Leadership to manage the recruitment to the post was much debated and was the subject of intense scrutiny by our Governing Body who were somewhat reluctant to use a leadership recruitment specialist. However, their confidence was reinstated as a result of your professional approach, your insightful knowledge and the resulting candidate pool produced for both appointments. I have no hesitation in recommending Emmaus to other schools."

Annie Sutton - Executive Principal, St Joseph's RC Specialist School and College

"Having previously struggled to recruit two Headteachers - for both a Primary and a Secondary school - Emmaus came to the rescue. Their expert advice and deep understanding of recruiting Headship positions in Catholic schools is invaluable, and I have no hesitation in recommending their knowhow and their values."

Fr David Gibbons, Chair of Governors & Parish Priest, Archdiocese of Southwark

"I have personal experience of the quality of service Emmaus provides, when I successfully applied for a Headship position through them. I always felt I could call up, get the ‘inside take’ on the school and ask any questions in complete confidence. The support and expert advice I received made the application process far less daunting and I would thoroughly recommend Emmaus to any Church School looking to appoint a key Leadership position."

Dan Pickard, Headteacher, The Bishop’s CE Primary School - Thetford

"I cannot imagine a better service to fulfil the requirement of helping a Catholic school find a Head. I was impressed with the number and high quality of candidates sourced by Emmaus Leadership."

Marjorie Bannister, Chair - St Michael's Catholic College, London

"I’m delighted with the way it went and the successful outcome (third SLT placement now!) helps confirm to Governors that your approach is right for these levels of appointment. It’s difficult to quantify the costs of recruiting and failing to get the right candidate ourselves - we’d only find out the true cost and also lost opportunities if we tried and failed. Altogether better to invest in getting it right first time, so thank you for all your hard work on this. The other side is the perception we leave with all candidates and I think we’ve worked together to do an excellent job (using your Assessment support). The communication, logistics and the care given I think is really important and Emmaus are a big part of that - you work as an extension of the school. I am fairly sure that all of the candidates will go away having had a great experience and that will help our reputation spread in a positive way."

Dave Cobb - School Business & Development Manager, Saint Cecilia's CE School, London
