The Threshold: Listening for God in the Quiet Days

The Threshold: Listening for God in the Quiet Days

18 December 2025

These days between Christmas and New Year are unlike any others. Time slows. Obligations pause. There is space to breathe. It is often in this stillness that deeper questions rise to the surface. Many leaders find this is the moment when they first sense the possibility of change or renewal.

And after the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire.
And after the fire came a gentle whisper.
1 Kings 19:12

God does not shout. He whispers. Elijah only heard it when he finally stopped running.

Leadership Lesson

In the noise of daily leadership, it is difficult to hear the quieter voice of God. The threshold days offer a rare invitation. Some leaders may feel reaffirmed in their calling. Others may sense a gentle stirring toward something new. Both can be faithful responses.

Reflection Questions

What question am I avoiding asking God
What might God be whispering to me in these days
Am I open to the possibility of change
Where do I need clarity for the year ahead

A Prayer

Lord, quiet my heart so I can hear Your voice.
Give me courage to listen and wisdom to respond.
Amen.

Emmaus Leadership Insight

This is also the time of year when leaders often share privately that they may be considering a new direction. For organisations, this can cause pressure as they realise they may need to begin a recruitment process sooner than expected. At Emmaus Leadership, we specialise in supporting Trusts, Dioceses and Church Schools through senior leadership transitions, including CEO, Director of Education, Headteacher, Principal and Deputy Headteacher appointments. We offer confidential conversations for leaders and governing bodies alike.
