Coming Back Gently

Reflections for school leaders returning after half term

I always think there’s a particular feeling that comes with returning after the half term break.

It is not September, with its sense of new beginnings. Nor is it January, with its firm resolve and reset. Half term is something different. It feels like stepping back into something already well underway, with the end of the school year now close enough to see.

Exams are running at a pace and approaching their close. End of year events are on the horizon. Staff are tired in ways that only the late summer term reveals.

It can be tempting in those first few days back to try and regain momentum quickly. To respond fast, re-establish control, and push through to July.

But I suspect, what is most needed is not a rush to act, but a willingness to move gently. To observe where things are, rather than immediately trying to shape them.

Scripture offers a simple but profound invitation: "Be still and know that I am God." (Psalm 46:10). It is not a call to inactivity. It is a reminder that clarity does not always come through movement. Often it is to be found through stillness.

Leadership does not require you to return at full pace on day one. It asks something quieter than that. To be present. To listen carefully. To notice what has shifted, both around you and within you.

You may find that some situations may need more care than expected. And yet, not everything needs to be resolved immediately. There is still time. There is always space to step back in gradually, if you will allow it.

Coming back gently is not a lack of leadership. It is often the truest sign of it.

Lord, as I return to the rhythm of this final stretch of term,
help me to do so with patience and clarity.

Give me the wisdom to listen before I act,
and the confidence to lead without rushing.
Amen.

If this return to term is prompting reflection about your leadership, your next steps, or what may lie ahead beyond July, those are often the moments where a quiet conversation can be most helpful. You are always welcome to speak with us in confidence.
